Good job yesterday girls! We tied East Grand Rapids 4-4. I checked the archives before the tournament yesterday, and we have never tied or beaten them before, so this was another first for the program. We lost to HC 6-2, so kudos to the Maroons for getting us yesterday I suppose.
Several individuals have been working on particular things, and it was fun to see them happen in actual matches. Kennidi and Colleen, you have been working on adding more power into your shots, and I saw that throughout the day. Colleen, in addition to that, you had to battle through some things in your first match, and I was impressed how well you did that. Third and Fourth doubles, you made some adjustments as the day went on that I thought will help you a lot going forward this season. With Hudsonville on Monday, you picked a good time to do it:) And everyone else, I saw more of the same great effort and intensity that I've seen all year. You are getting better and better all the time. Parents, I have a request: The food provided for us by the parents at EGR yesterday was way above and beyond what any other school has ever done for us. For those who weren't there, they provided a full spread of food and drinks for every player, parent, and coach for all teams. If you feel inclined, shoot an email to EGR's Athletic director. I bet their program would like it if their AD got a bunch of nice comments to start their week. I went on their website and his name is Tim Johnston, and his email is [email protected]. I will send my email to him as soon as I post this. I hope to see many of you tonight at the Keech's! Coach Schwallier Parents/Players,
Here's some info to keep us all on the same page: EGR Invitational: Show up at Transportation: 7:00am Arrive at EGR: 8:00am or a little before Play Begins: 8:30am Competing Teams: EGR, Holland Christian, and West Ottawa. So, each girl will play two matches on Saturday, and have a round where they sit out, while the other two teams play each other. I expect to be home mid-afternoon assuming good weather. Varsity Pasta Party: Sunday evening at the Keech's at 5:00pm. Bring a swimsuit if you want to go in the hot tub. Landon told me he wants to go, but may be napping, so we will see. Year-End Banquet: Tuesday, June 4 6:30 PM HS South Cafeteria More details about who will bring what will come, but I want everyone to at least have the date marked on the calendar. In other action, our JV team will be competing in a TWO tournaments this weekend. Some of our girls will be at the Holland Invitational, which is actually a varsity tournament. This will be a great opportunity to see how they can perform against varsity teams. The most important team to use as a barometer is Grand Haven, because they are a varsity team that we will definitely need to beat next Spring. Our Coaching staff for this event is Coach VandePoel and Coach Rutgers. Both are excellent, so you are in good hands! If there's anyone else helping out who I am not aware of, I want to say thanks to you as well. Other JV girls will be going to the NorthPointe Christian Invitational. This will be a great experience as well, as it will give many girls an opportunity to play 3 matches against other schools. Coach Gahan and I will try to get results posted online as soon as we can so everyone can see the results from all the competitions. Good luck everyone! Coach Schwallier Kyle graduated in 2009 and is now a Senior at Aquinas College. He was an outstanding player at West Ottawa, and his game has risen several levels since then. Parents, Players, and Coaches:
I just wanted to give a quick thank you to everyone. I've enjoyed the past couple months a great deal, and a lot of people are doing very positive things. Players: You are all playing incredible. The Varsity is 4-0 against OK-Red teams, the JV crushes everyone they meet, and both Harbor Lights and Mac Bay are posting amazing scores every time I look. You work hard and have great attitudes. All of the coaches are telling me every week how much fun it is to be your coach. Parents: You have bent over backwards to help the program all year long. The program has received numerous donations from you, you volunteer time willingly, and most importantly, you have been very supportive of your kids and us coaches. Thank you! Coaches: Coach Gahan, Coach Curtin, and Coach Dykens the job you are doing with the JV and Middle School teams is amazing. I love that you are posting scores so we can see how every team is doing anytime we want. I love that you have our players attacking, understanding the importance of the serve/return, and they improving constantly. Thank you! -Coach Schwallier Hello Parents, I was asked by the boosters in an email to post this, so here you go:
Reps - please make sure this note gets to ALL parents - 9th grade thru 12th grade. Attention all parents of athletes. We are having a very difficult time filling the concession stands this spring. I know we are all busy; the concessions (run by the WO Athletic Boosters) bring in money that goes straight to all West Ottawa teams. Teams are able to purchase uniforms and training equipment with money from concession sales. If a concession assignment is not filled, the team will lose 20% their allowed Boosters money; if the team already spent their money for the 2012-2013 year, the deduction will go towards next year. It is important to offer food and drinks for the athletes and visitors. Here are the results from the victory over Grandville on Monday. Congrats to all the girls, you all played fantastic for the little time we have had to practice on the courts.

Team Pictures Both teams have uniforms in, so we can finally get our team picture taken. All girls have been given envelopes to take home after practice today, so make sure to bring them tomorrow for our picture. If the weather is nice, our pictures will be outside. If it rains, then our pictures will be in the North Auxillary Gym at 4:00PM. Girls, make sure to bring your uniforms! EK Makeup will be this Thursday, April 25. Varsity will be Away, JV will be at Home. FHN Makeup will be Monday, April 29 at FHN. This will only apply to varsity. Needs: I need drivers for EK and FHN, so if you can drive, let me know soon please. Thanks Grandville Recap: The Varsity and JV both won, and did a very good job. The Varsity won 6-2. Grandville generally puts a nice team together, so this is a good sign for us. We will need to continue to improve though when we play Grand Haven on Wednesday. But I would always say that as a season progresses, so that's not a bad thing. I just want to make sure everyone understands the need to keep working on their games. Have a good night, Coach Schwallier Parent/Players,
Myself and several other coaches felt that the cold weather mixed with the wind would create conditions what would be unhealthy for all the girls tomorrow. The tournament is cancelled, so let's just spend some time in Holland this weekend! I hope you enjoy yourselves at Prom tonight, but safe. There are lot of people who care very much about you who want you to be safe/careful at the dance, on the roads, and everywhere you go. Have a good night. -Coach Schwallier Parents/Players,
It looks like this thing is going to actually happen tomorrow. It's going to be a cool day, but rain is not a large part of the forecast. Because this is the morning after the Prom, it will be an out of the ordinary day...so, let's all make sure we are extra prepared!!! Here we go: Tournament Information: Saturday, April 20th, 2013 ***Leave from Transportation: 6:20 AM*** Place: Okemos High School (12cts) and Chippewa M.S. (10cts) (They are a mile apart) Sites: 1 and 2 singles and 1, 2 and 3 doubles OHS 3 and 4 singles and 4 doubles at CMS Players Meeting: 8:30 AM – Meet at Okemos High School Courts Starting Time: 9:00 A.M. Awards: Trophy: 1st and 2nd place teams; Medals: 1st, 2nd and backdraw winner. Invited Schools: East Lansing, Rockford,Cranbrook Kingswood,St. Clair,Marian,Northville, Okemos, WO Brackets: Mixed draw: Each flight to play 3 matches Match Play: Each Match is the best two out of three sets. If spit sets; 3rd set will be a super tie break Scoring: One point for each win. Requests from Coach Schwallier: Parents and Parents: 1. Make sure players have their stuff 100% ready to go before they leave for prom. Ideally, have bag/shoes, etc in the vehicle they are going to drive to transportation in the morning. 2. Make sure you are up and out the door on time. We are going to leave from transportation as late as I feel we can afford so the girls get more sleep. So, if anyone is late in the morning, it will hurt us more than normal. 3. Make sure you have enough layers. It's always colder than you think out there. Several girls will already be tired from Friday night, let's try to avoid a slew of sick girls on Monday:) Ok, this tournament was scheduled so we can begin to see how we stack up against the best teams on the East side of Michigan. A good day by our girls could mean seeds for them at the State Tournament. Let's have fun and kick some butt!!!!! Then let's go home and get some rest:) -Coach Schwallier |
